Stepbrother arrested over drowning of four-year-old in Bangi

KAJANG: A 26-year-old man has been detained in connection with the death by drowning of a four-year-old girl in the swimming pool of a Bangi apartment complex earlier this month.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zaid Hassan said the suspect, the victim's stepbrother, was detained on Sunday (Sept 24) after police scrutinised CCTV footage of the scene.

"Based on our checks, we discovered the man was near the pool when the incident occurred.

"He (is seen only looking) at the victim drowning without doing anything to save her," he said in a statement on Monday (Sept 25).

A report of the incident was lodged by a medical officer from Hospital Serdang, who treated the victim on Sept 13.

"Investigation showed the victim drowned in a swimming pool at about 3pm. She was initially brought to a clinic before being sent to Hospital Serdang.

"However, she died the next day (Sept 14) after receiving treatment and the case was initially classified as sudden death," ACP Mohd Zaid added.

The suspect was detained for further investigation, he added.

"The case is (being investigated) under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

"We urge those with information to contact investigating officer Insp Muhammad Azrul Nizam Zainal Abidin at 016-9985730 or the nearest police station," he added.
